As explained by Mr. Shepherd, density would be the most important, especially for the market value of said pearl.

    Philippine Pearls

Undated article by David Federman We don?t mean to rain on anyone?s parade or party, but perfect storms look to have burst or be brewing in some of the world?s biggest pearl crop centers. When we say ?perfect storms,? we?re not being literal, of course. We?re talking about savage alignments of...

    Conch Pearl

An article by David Federman Marine archeologist Sue Hendrickson was, until last year, a one-woman cartel for a little-known pearl found in a Caribbean univalve mollusk called a Queen conch (pronounced conk, as in honk). Now she shares her conch pearl monopoly with renowned Geneva...

    Circle Pearls

An article by David Federman It seemed a good idea at the time. To find out why so many of Tahiti?s and, to a far lesser extent, Australia?s, Indonesia?s, and China?s cultured pearls grow with single or parallel grooves in them, just ask a pearl farmer. So we had Pamela Butler of Ocean Gem...

    Worn Nacre

While this is concerning Tahitian pearls (as posted by OP), that observation could be brought to many other origins, I am however not so surprised to see low quality, although as posted by Wendy (beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder...) some standard are set for what we (producers)...

    Melo Pearl

An article by David Federman, not dated sadly... As bad guesses go, this one was legendary. Last November, when Christie?s Hong Kong became the first of the world?s major auction houses to offer a melo pearl, it gave a pre-sale estimate to the one it chose to sell of between $20,000 and...

    Worn Nacre

Absolutely, thickness of the nacre is indeed the culprit but I doubt that what is done by Service de la Perliculture in French Polynesia foolproof... Further to what you said, Polynesia isn't French Polynesia and black pearls are not solely produced by Tahiti. Wendy I added info here: link.

High Quality Pearls That Can Last a Life Time

In addition to the video posted by Wendy Graham regarding the Ministry de Perliculture de Tahiti tightly controling the quality of pearls released on the market and setting a standard nacre thickness of 0.8mm or more... as seen here: an article by Ann Galea However I am still not convinced...

    Worn Nacre

Ok, it would be nice for Josh to pitch in here but this does not explain why so many pearls have too many rings, are too small, or just of low quality... Sadly the video has no sound and looks like a phone video taken by a visitor... I am however not sure that all of the production of French...

??? Local French government?... what about pearls produced in Polynesia? (New Zealand, Hawaii, Easter Island, and American Samoa) That is really interesting. Thanks in advance for the update.

    Worn Nacre

Hi just being curious, found this thread quite interesting, thin coating do indeed exist. You mentioned a reputable source that would x-ray all pearls before export. May I ask if this is already done or if this is what you would like to see being done? GIA does this but the cost is quite high...
