Learned my lesson re: Cheap Tools

Yes, Lindstr?m is absolutely great! Well, maybe not the cutter, I can't say anything about those because I haven't tried them. But the RX round nose pliers they make are great. Makes it really easy to bend small curves, and they grip the metal so well. I feel warm and nice when thinking about...

    Silver/goldsmithing

dkan: That's very much true but a professional goldsmith that he say he is should be able to set stones. I'm fairly sure it's part of the ges?ll-test (a goldsmith test that is a proof of your abilities as a goldsmith. To become a goldsmith master in Sweden you have to do that test and pass it.)

Yeah, OK, The reason he wont teach me advanced things such as the bezel setting that's described in detail in all my four basic goldsmith books is that he don't know how to do it himself.

It was just an opinion, no need to get upset/defensive. As for the files, of course they'll get clogged if you don't clean them regurarily. I'm curious about what "the right way" is like...? And as for things that look good, they tend to be well made if they look good, and that was why I said...

    Tumbler?

Knotty, I think you misunderstood me, the first link is to three tumblers, and I want the last one on the list, which is rotary. Is dishwashing detergent the same kind of stuff as the expensive stuff you can buy at riogrande? Sorry for all the stuffs. Barbie: I was hooked on the first lesson...

    Tumbler?

I've pretty much gathered that I need a polishing tumbler for my jewellery because: 1. I don't know how to polish jewellery by hand. 2. I think polishing by hand would be very time consuming. 3. I can't afford a flex shaft yet. 4. Buffing wheels scare me. 5. Buffing wheels can rip your fingers...

Mausketeer: I don't believe there are any rights and wrongs for most things, as long as the final result looks nice. Soldering is the exception for that, though, like you said but otherwise I think it's fine to think outside the box and do things your way. At least that's how I usually do it...

Hi everyone. Decided it?s time to catch up so here goes: Two weeks ago when I went to the course I picked up my bracelet that had been in the thumbler. Wow! It?s the best thing I`ve done so far! The soldering on it looks almost like it?s not there, it?s all smooth and nice. And so shiny...

    Silver/goldsmithing

Too lazy to post updates to how the course went last week. I bought a small, cheapo torch the other day, and I`ve decided to order some tools to my boyfriends address in England from a shop called cooksongold.com Anyone have any experience with that site? I`ve also found an anvil on eBay, it...

    Which course shouild i do?

The stonesetting course! As Jeremy said, the new course isn?t out yet. And jewelrymaking is fun. Personally, I`d love a stonesetting course.

Tutorial on making my 2-strand hook-and-eye clasp

Mm. And the thing is, I think I`d prefer a bigger anvil so I have to pay even more. There?s just so much more equipment you need if you want to do smithing than beading... It?s really expensive in the start to get everything you need even if you look around for the cheapest places. I really...

Tutorial on making my 2-strand hook-and-eye clasp

I bet it is! Steel is always heavier than you think. A small 105 mm long anvil here costs approx 360 sek here. One USD is currently about 8 SEK. Maybe it?s just me but I think that?s awfully expensive?

Tutorial on making my 2-strand hook-and-eye clasp

Great tutorial! Good advice about work hardening the wire. Most guides I?ve read about beading never tell you about this. I didn?t know about things like work hardening and annealing at all until I read about it in a silversmithing book and when my teacher told us about it on the course, but...

    Round or Baroque/Circle or Both?

Wow! Thanks for the picture Josh! I would pick the circled pearls... They seem more radiant!

I?ve no idea what you mean by "making joints". When you glue something, there is a gap, it?s indicredibly tiny but it?s there.

Top Ten Boo-Boos LBers (and knotters) make.

I really recognize the thing about knocking over things... I think it?d be a great idea to put a white carpet under your worktable so that you can easily see what you?ve dropped.

    Round or Baroque/Circle or Both?

As for tahitians, I`ve stangely seen more colourful round ones than colourful baroque ones... So I`d go for round in most cases. I think drops are nice for earrings though, or pendants.

Hi Borah, glad to hear your news. As for soldering, I`m pretty sure it is supposed to fill gaps, because the solder have a capilary action when it flows, and it flows into the gaps, however the gaps can?t be too big or the solder wont flow into them. Maybe that was because I could still see the...

Gotten back from yet another lesson. Guess what? Finally (!) finished my bracelet! I`m very surprised by how well it turned out, it looks like a professional have done it, rather than a newbie, and that?s before it went into the polishing thumbler... I`m so excited about going there next week...
