    Naturals and nuclei?

Just noticed this mid-way through a bibliography search: Quite upfront: SSEF Facette, No.16 [this link opens Pdf] page 17. "Especially gonad-grown bead-less cultured pearls (product of a first bead rejection), often called “South Sea Keshi” in the trade, are sometimes difficult to identify...

    Expert opinions needed. Tahitians?

No disagreement. The quote comes from a New Bond Street locale, last summer.

All aside, someone took the time to describe interesting pearls in multicolour strands ... in a sale no less. Whether it happened before or not, feels good this side of the screen.

    Expert opinions needed. Tahitians?

Color in first picture looks very freshwater - would have guessed they were a darker, natural bluish lavender strand photographed kindly. The rest of the pictures make me wonder: if freshwater, then dyed - not natural color as the first guess. Puzzling. But even if the claimed ID pans out... In...

    Nautilus pearl

Same thought here - those pictures belong together. The article reminded me of some early artistic incarnations of Nautius shells in fantastic cabinet iteams cca.16th century Europe. Strange that from all things that could have been and were brought from the same exotic locations as the...

    PP new site design

Just random thoughts: - Did not expect the new site to be released this soon! The navigation seems to have improved marvelously (can see more things at once, get more details then before in a few clicks... for just about anything listed). 'Though that the eye-grabbing blue buttons were simply...

What goes into a pearl report? (GIA Thailand)

Ouch! 'Gatekeeper' fits extremely well, I think... The folks must be proud of getting results without some big black box [=testing equipment too specialized or too expensive to allow for layman reading or replication of results]. Not sure exactly how important this is for research there, but...

What goes into a pearl report? (GIA Thailand)

Ripoff, you say? Now I'm curious to hear what you make of the findings and the pearl! The links work for me. The file is too lare to attach here (~ 2Mb)... Could e-mail it if you want. On a bad connection, it might work better to right-click the links and 'Save' the file on your HD before opening.

What goes into a pearl report? (GIA Thailand)

GIA Thai has started to put research reports up online for some time, and the latest is of a large pearl with some story ('An unusual pearl...'). The paper describes the lab works along the way (all the more interesting for that, methinks): http://www.giathai.net/lab_research_notes_VP03.php...

    Pearl Life

The photo archive of 'Life' magazine has just become available on Google Images... among the stash, there are quite a few vintage photos of pearling and pearls. Try THESE, for a sample. To search the Life archive on Google, go to Google Images and add the words 'source:life' (no quotation...

    Are Indian "natural" pearls natural?

Yeah! A Hell of a pressure on Madoff's defense team to prop up the claim that he acted alone. If that stands, the man should be up for the next Economics Nobel (on account of juridical proof that he outsmart financial markets - Casandras included). LOL!

    Are Indian "natural" pearls natural?

The list is simply of the clients - those who had a choice to make about Madoff's offer. [and that looks short... hm... wonder what the complete client list looks like, if it ever gets fairly complete, a serious problem.] Layer by layer, their clients and dependents had another - their turn to...

    Are Indian "natural" pearls natural?

Well, here's a list: Madoff Clients. Even his auditor complains of having been fool(ed). Pitty-worthy indeed; something's telling me that one could sell cruize tickets to the worries of these folks [hint: it's the numbers!]. I do not know how the US law might sort out the case of 'Feeders' in...

    Are Indian "natural" pearls natural?

It would be interesting to know how many of the folks paying for those reports actually believe that the 'paper' is NEVER wrong and the respective labs DO NOT make mistakes. Ever. Or their heads shall fall... or something. 'Bet that bit of information would be interesting to quite a few...

    Are Indian "natural" pearls natural?

Gemological research is not a huge field. Compared to finance - it's a freakin' footnote! Name one institution with fool proof reputation... I think all those unfortunate cases do have one thing in common: they were high stakes schemes in which buyers, sellers had an interest to cooperate...

    Fossil Pearls??????????

I have never seen a section thought a fossil pearl. Have seen lots of mineral formations layered like this though, some occurring loose of substrate are even called 'cave pearls' (run a search - there is a thread with pictures on the forum). Such things can also be found encased in calcite...
