There is a new study out in PNAS about corals in the Barrier Reef. The looked at the various influences of coral reef disappearance. Not sure whether that applies to other areas as well. http://news.mongabay.com/2012/1001-hance-greatbarrierreef-halved.html

Perhaps mass mortality is more a problem of aquaculture and stock selection (did they do that in France?). Since most pearl farms probably use wild or still genetically diverse stock, they may not see this as a problem yet. Having said that I thought Japanese pearl farms have had mass mortality...

I have seen pop up some articles about ocean acidification and I try to find them again. Nature has recently introduced a new journal called "Nature Climate Change". I have not had the time to read it consistently, but they do have some manuscripts on coral reefs in their latest issue...

I call these types of Chinese freshwater the "chicken feet" pearls. They remind me of some of the dishes my Chinese friends like. Though yours come with an additional bar across, which I have never seen so far. Look like hands indeed.
