Tahitian Pearl Farming: A day in the life...

AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!! Effisk, you're KILLING me with that. Sunshine, ocean, swell and sweet temperatures... I thought I was coping pretty well until that picture came along. I guess I'm getting a taste of my own medicine for posting all those pictures of the tropics.

Tahitian Pearl Farming: A day in the life...

Haha, yeah it was something to the effect of "Don't make me drop this anchor!" Yup, first spring for the whole family. Just makes you want to get off the computer and get outside. :) Ramona that's great that you can sit on the front porch. Here it's still a bit chilly to be outside and not...

Tahitian Pearl Farming: A day in the life...

Hey Lisa, haha yeah that one rang in our house too. :) Nora are you branding me :D ? No, I'm writing this from the green and soon to be much greener Pacific North West. Spring is just kicking in here and it's pretty amazing. I've never seen a proper spring in my whole life. I'll be going to...

    Moruroa and Marutea Sud

Thyroid sickness rates in Polynesia are totally off the charts as are radiation related types of cancer. Anyone who has lived in Tahiti will tell you as much. I think that being a child on Ahe atoll where our farm (Kamoka) is is probably related to the hyperthyroidism I have had to contend...

    Visting French Polynesia

Hi Teeuk, As for inter-island travel, if you are on a tight time frame, the more exotic supply boats will be out of the question. Just go to www.airtahiti.pf for flight info to the Tuamotus or the high islands. You could visit the Champon pearl farm if you want to go to the Vanilla Island of...

    Lagoon Island Pearl Farm

Great photos Dave. Really makes one want to come and visit, especially the seafood. Pattye, I'll take your share of oysters if that's OK. Dave is it Bring-Your-Own-Lemon up your way?

    27mm Kamoka Tahitian Pearl!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Lisa, One of these days (looking like sooner than later) I'm going to get a blog kind of thing together. A place to put stories that have been over-hyped (ahem...) as well as videos. I know what you mean though by not having your icon of choice. Skype has some good ones like the little...

    27mm Kamoka Tahitian Pearl!!!!!!!!!!

Marianne, it starts with something more like: "it was a bright and sunny day, the trades winds blowing in a gentle yet sinister way..." Caitlin, thank you for the amazing vote of confidence. See pm. Anna and Nerida, if it was only that easy. Some time after a year in age, the longer pearls...

    27mm Kamoka Tahitian Pearl!!!!!!!!!!

Haha, I'm amused too. :) Caitlin, next time I see you I'll tell you my The Pearl story. It was a flawless 15mm light green jewel of a pearl... I regret it to this day.

    27mm Kamoka Tahitian Pearl!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Nora.:D:D:D. Jeremy very astute of you. It was on an ear ring backing. 8.5mm first graft little gem. I had to dig in to my photo archives and was bumming I couldn't find a pearl with nice color all on it's own that everyone hadn't already seen.:p The pics of the Service de la...

    27mm Kamoka Tahitian Pearl!!!!!!!!!!

Here's a close up of the X-ray. Pascal was frustrated to not be able to find it. As far as I can tell, it's the largest pearl of gem quality ever produced in French Polynesia. What's it worth? Still too early to tell but the price will be accompanied by at least six zeros, maybe...

    27mm Kamoka Tahitian Pearl!!!!!!!!!!

We had it X-rayed by the Service de la Perliculture and the nacre thickness was so thick, they couldn't find the nucleus. Here's Pascal, searching in vain for signs of the bead at the center.

    27mm Kamoka Tahitian Pearl!!!!!!!!!!

WOW. I can't begin to explain what we are going through down here. In the process of finishing up our latest harvest, we discovered some oysters at the end of a line that had been there for a very long time. There was still a plastic Dymo marker on one of the strings that said April 20, 1997...
