some of the mistakes are no intentional (gulf of mexico) while some others may well be intentional. I find it suprizing that no one in the committee corected the gulf of mexico mistake, which makes me wonder if the actually read the finished thing. I also find suprizing that all agreed about the...

    Report from Hong Kong

Mike, are you going to that tahitian pearl auction? I'd love to hear how the auction went. It is the first one since all the news about the GIE and the export tax and it would be interesting to see how buyers react.

I absolutely agree. Some of these guys are however experts and do know the product. Ken Scaratt for instance. It looks like they overlooked the "details"... the odd pearl types... and the freshies. I'm actually wondering if The Pearl Steering Committee actually did write the blue book or just...

GIE Perles de Tahiti is Done

Isn't the service de la perliculture a completely different organization from the GIE PDT? They were however both created at the initiative of the local government, but I don't think the dissolution of the GIE PDT would affect the nacre thickness minimum. There are other GIEs around...

thrift store find: too good to be true?

They're 100% faux. Some members of the discussion may be too polite to say so. I'm not. :p I had some doubts with the first couple of pics, but these two don't lie: https://www.pearl-guide.com/forum/attachments/cultured-pearls/5119d1221095711-thrift-store-find-too-good-true-pearls2.jpg...

Circled pearls: why do they grow like that?

Circled pearls are circled because they're turning in the pearl sac. At one point and for some reason the production of nacre slows down on parts of the the pearl sac's surface. Because the pearl is moving in the sac, the depression follows, thus creating circles. It's a theory that's still...

    Nautilus pearl

I'll really have to get a closeup as the surface is really hard to describe. It isn't smooth, I wouldn't say porcelain like. It's actually slightly bumpy, but with a regular pattern. No flames comparable to the conch pearls. It seems slightly transparent too. There is no iridescence as such but...
