Caption reads: microradiograph of a round 1.49ct Nautilus pearl revealing a centrally placed void or area of organic matter.

    Nautilus pearl

I was having a look at the monograph again and the radiograph of figure 44 struck me. I see something that resembles a tiny nautilus or some kind of coil-shaped something.

Interesting. What tool allows such a thin section without breaking the pearl?

New Pearl Farm in WA's Pilbara

They are far from other farms, which probably lessens the risk of epizootics such as the one that occured in 2006. And far from the natural gas plant that's supposed to be built in the Kimberley. Maybe not such a bold move after all.

    Nautilus pearl

The monograph mentions 5 pearls from Nautilus pompilius, and one from Argonauta hians. Only three of these pearls were from Hubert Bari. Were the other pearls identified as tridacna pearls too?

    Nautilus pearl

The photo I posted was shot by Hubert. It was part of a series of photos of natural pearls of various origins (that's a lot of ofs!). I posted a few more of the series in another thread a while ago. The pearl he showed me was the smaller ovale one. I did not see the larger round. I don't have...

Jewellery News Asia's 2010 Pearl Report

Has anyone had a chance to read it? Any good feedback? I'm trying to see if I can buy that issue (Feb 2011) without having to subscribe for a year.

    Nautilus pearl

Hi Steve, These pearls are some of those that were later shown in higher resolution on the forum if I remember well (Hubert Bari's pearls). They were part of Ken Scarratt's monograph. I have a lot of catching up to do on the forum!

What do you think these are?

Akoyas did not even cross my mind. I actually did not look very closely, even though upon closer inspection I would not have said akoya. Not used to seeing akoyas with such thick nacre.

What do you think these are?

The first item looks like fake pearls. I don't see any knots between the pearls, and the clasp does not look like gold to me. I am no vintage pearl jewelry expert but the graduation of the pearls looks suspicious too. The second item is made of real pearls. Real freshwater pearls that is.

    Tom Stern's natural pearls

Interesting. I am very curious to know how the price change is calculated? Are characteristics such as size and origin taken into account?

    Online pearl retailers referencing system

Yes. I think there are two major ways of doing it: you either use an arbitrary system where the item cannot be guessed from the reference (ex: 78765443) or you use a system where you can deduce the product from the reference (ex: NEJPW065-45). And everything in between (ex: FWN200). Also, do...

    Online pearl retailers referencing system

Hi all, not a pearling industry news thread per se, but rather addressed to online pearl retailers. I was wondering what referencing system you were using for your inventory, and why? (and what you would change if given the opportunity). I am working on my own system, and looking for advice...

    KIMA (Tridacna sp) Pearls

Your pictures are JPEG, which is fine, but they are saved under the CMYK mode instead of RGB color. That is why they do not show on Internet Explorer. When saving the picture, make sure they're RGB. Using Photoshop, this can be done in the main menu Image > Mode > RGB Color. I was dragged back...
