    Tahitian pearls - Destroyed!

The owner may be on medication, or has high acidity, both could wear thin the nacre - but yes it's up there.

    Size of drill holes?

Hi Katbran, I use one needle only- the type of needle I use are the stiff sort. Reaming and drilling that's for another thread- the difference between 0.8 and 0.9mm isn't going to make a difference in later rearranging the pearls.

    Size of drill holes?

I like working with .8 and if all the pearls are quite large .9 On a personal level I use four strands either 4 fine - or 2 medium combined with two fine. I find the finer the thread the neater the knot. #30 I would class as medium. The last two pearls at the back I like to hand ream, or if...

Little Hole, Big Hole - What to do?

What I do when I have a large hole pearl, I put a small holed pearl tight up to the large holed pearl and then continue knotting as normal.

    adhesives & glue solvents

Superglue of any sort wouldn't be my recommendation. As a class of glue they have some important flaws, not the least being that their shear strength is quite poor. We have all no doubt seen the adverts where one inch glued square is holding a car/truck/heavy object in mid air - what the ads...

    Antique seed pearls

Wow wow and wow! They are lux and I'm so jealous. I love the fact that they have a wonderful history and you have a gorgeous picture of your great grandmother wearing them.

Problem with tiny stones in necklaces

The problem is usually the wire products, thread would help as it does not roll on the neck like the wire products. I think you would still have an issue because what ever you put at the back if wire was used, it's the nature of the beast. One last thing gimp, French wire can also contribute...

Another Poe Pipi Pearl Ring - Tells and Trips

Hi Paul, gorgeous find there, would love to see more photos of the ring especially the shoulders How wide is the shank? Are the collets the same carat of gold as the shank? The collets look hand made and not manufactured, all in all a lovely interesting piece.

enlarging drillholes without breaking the pearls

Hi Anna, yes those are broaches, you would have to use a pin vice to hold them. The ones I use are the A F brand and they have handles. They would be very safe to use on natural pearls as you have full control, they actively cut, not like the diamond coated reamers that "grind" and take...

I think treasure hunting is in my blood

It's lovely to have a beautiful watch like this especially with the family history that travels with it. I think if you ever get to Aus you should tee up with my Hubby. As part of his watchmaking training at the WOSTEP college in Switzerland he had to repair pieces like this, and some which...

To Ream or Not to Ream....

On the subject of secret beaders thread, I use the finer version of this. I use four threads in the colours only (I still use Kaygee in white). I mostly finish off with a drill hole size of .9mm As I have mentioned in numerous threads, I use jewellers cutting broaches when I have to go up one...
