In need of informed opinion, please!

Hi Susan,, and thankyou for the gorgeous photos of your pearls. They really are lovely. No, your pearls will not lose any value if you have them restrung. Just make sure that they are done by a reputable stringer, and ensure that the original clasp is re-used. They look to be in great...

I agree - it adds to the character and beauty of the piece.

Yes, it is sad but true that your vendor has lied to you. I am sorry, as you have probably paid far far more for these pearls than they are worth. Costly GIA analysis is not going to tell you anything you want to hear, either. The new GSS photo is also of cultured pearls - color looks to be...

    Victorian Pearl and Gold Necklace

beautiful. I love this piece and it looks like the real deal. It is elegant, the gold work is gorgeous, and the pearls very pretty. You know I go on about this but would you post a neck shot please??

Another lurker coming out of the shadows

Roy - I agree that the color of the blacks is quite attractive. however I would advise against having any test done on the black 'brackish' strand - they are as they are - dyed cultured freshwater pearls. I agree with Dave too that the drop 'Tahitian' pendant is also a dyed freshwater. I...

Brackish water pearls (saltwater? or freshwater?)

i agree! They are indeed beautiful, and hence the need for disclosure in selling. They are what they are, and should be appreciated as such! Roy has lovely pearls here, but yes, they should have been inexpensive - I hope the scammer in this situation hasn't profited too much!

Brackish water pearls (saltwater? or freshwater?)

Caitlin there are a few around being dyed that really intense black. I have some cheap-as-chips wonky baroque strands that I ordered as black, and were dyed this obsidian black rather than peacock black for me. I do get asked for this color very occasionally - I also have a few large drop...

Another lurker coming out of the shadows

Hi Roy - yes, I agree with the others here - a pretty collection. Dawn - the beautiful oval pearls are sold in China as rice pearls - not rice as in rice krispies, but shaped like a fat grain of rice. Roy, the peach freshwaters you have are indeed very pretty. I have already said my bit...

Brackish water pearls (saltwater? or freshwater?)

Roy can you tell us more about when and where they were purchased? Do you know the mollusk species from which they were harvested?

Brackish water pearls (saltwater? or freshwater?)

The pearls don't look bead nucleated, as one would expect for saltwater pearls - the shape is much more freshwater in nature, and therefore color treated post harvest. Where were the pearls purchased, Roy? I haven't ever come across pearls marketed as being 'brackish water' before...

My new Sea of Cortez Pendant from UK arrived today!

Yes Caitlin, I still talk to Sue occasionally, but miss her input to the forum. Also miss the others that you mentioned, and a couple of others... That SoC pendant is just gorgeous - so glad to see it has a proud new owner! Can I ask for a neck shot please?

    freshwater nucleated pearls, maximal size

The JTV piece is made of regular tissue-nucleated pearls, not bead nucleated, and definitely not 'Edisons'.. Yes Jeremy, it would be interesting to see what the pearls actually looked like once bought and paid for.

    Japanese Kasumi vs. Chinese "Look-a-likes"

It is important to note that the Chinese aren't growing these pearls to be Kasumi lookalikes, in fact most of the vendors of these pearls probably wouldn't know much about the Kasumi pearls at all. The market for the Chinese pearls is based on their stand alone appeal, not the resemblance to...

    Mikimoto Pearl with Broken Bail

Hi Tija, Sorry to have not seen your thread until now - I have many jewelers amongst my retailers, quite a few in Queensland, too! Even some very good manufacturing jewelers - many in regional centers, too. Let me know where you are. Alternately, I am sure I could organize someone here in...
