    Japanese Kasumi vs. Chinese "Look-a-likes"

Thankyou everyone... the bracelets are all sold now, and not really sure where I will go with the kasumi-ish pearls. They are much more readily available than they were last year, and quite a lot cheaper. That means that they don't really hold their value as artisan pieces, but aren't a...

    Japanese Kasumi vs. Chinese "Look-a-likes"

Thanks Caitlin - just having major laptop issues and my machine froze... here it is again: Some kasumi-esque pearls of mine - photos, whilst copyright to me are by Tim Robinson, occasional contributor to this forum and pearl photographer extraordinaire (Paspaley catalogues, the Dubai Pearl...

    Greetings from a new bod?

I wondered if the gold was a little enhanced and that made the inclusions more pronounced. The GSS I have seen with similar markings have looked more like the ones in the photos..

Another lurker coming out of the shadows

beautifully put, Sheryl. We all acknowledge that we can be wrong, so try to stay on the positive - particularly as we all do love pearls! It is a hard truth to tell someone who has come to you with a precious purchase or inheritance that their pearls are something other than how they were...

    Large Pondslime

Adeline, the earrings are exquisite! I would love to see a photo of them being worn... I think your grey pondslimes are naturally colored, and yes, you are correct that the other group is comprised of grey/blue (again I am sure natural) colored baroque akoyas.

    Greetings from a new bod?

Welcome to the forum, May and Mike... this is a natural inclusion, and just like diamonds, the fewer inclusions, the more valuable the pearl. Mother nature's hand!

    Japanese Kasumi vs. Chinese "Look-a-likes"

Jodie, sorry, I am a shocker at taking photos. Yes, the pearls are ridiculously light, fabulous for making big earrings!

    Japanese Kasumi vs. Chinese "Look-a-likes"

Pattye, A lot of the souffl? pearls that I have seen have bits of chipped nacre - it takes a lot of picking to find really good strands, and they are still not really plentiful. I bought quite a few singles, and some which have paired very well (large, 16mm or so) but only a few strands so far...

    Tahitian Drop Strand

Jodie - they are worth keeping, don't you think? They look great on you (oh, to have a young young neck..) and the colors liven up as expected when worn. I would wear them for a while and see if they grow on you - you won't lose if you resell them later on.

    Japanese Kasumi vs. Chinese "Look-a-likes"

These pearls are a joy to work with.... The shell really is an intriguing thing... I saw the shell over dinner with a few friends in HK early this year (thanks JS!) and it is definitely one different little thing to what we are used to seeing. The colours are amazing, and show off some of...

Jodie, the piece is gorgeous no matter what it is. Guess that is the point sometimes! Just do a neck shot please when it is safely home with you...

Another lurker coming out of the shadows

Roy, I thank you for your comments. I did say that if the GSS were authentic they had amazing lustre and surface quality and excellent matching. My comments stand. I hope your wife loves them! In a grainy photograph, the differences between perfect pearls and shell based pearls are...

    Kevlar Thread

Caitlin, didn't Knotty use kite thread for stringing? I can't remember... Jodie, thankyou for bringing this up!

Another lurker coming out of the shadows

maybe, but there isn't an excuse for that though on a forum which is educational, is there? I am sure he knows what he has there, but I don't think the motives are so altruistic.

Another lurker coming out of the shadows

Caitlin, the rice pearls and the blacks would be even less, and yes, that is why I said 'if they are authentic' regarding the GSS - I don't think they are either... I think shell based. Roy - can you tell us more about the vendor? Otherwise I think we are all thinking that you are showing us...
