enlarging drillholes without breaking the pearls

Some people drill with Dremels and other forms of drills, I have a pearl drill and even then things can go wrong. Unless I was very experienced, I wouldn't drill pearls I cared about with anything except a pearl drill bit no matter what kind of drill I was using.

    CFW or Tahitian?

All the advice is good. If you really want to cruise around and look through lots of unknown sites, I'd at least limit it to Etsy. For the most part you will find better info and product. I go through the Tahitians listings fairly regularly to keep my fingers on the pulse of that market.

To Ream or Not to Ream....

You have a lot of good advice on thread, but I think size 6 is the largest I would use. As for reaming, what are you using? If they are as large as you are describing and as expensive, are the bead nucleated? I would be afraid to enlarge without a drill, but I don't know about reaming.

A learning exercise: what makes this a good/bad specimen

The pearls that I've seen like this (not from this seller, but in general) are very dull and flat, not even the luster these shots are showing, which seem to have been amped up. They also will usually have some very deep pits, sometimes all the way to the nucleus, and the pitting is visible...

Views on Pearl Factory, Pick a Pearl, and other pearl-in-oyster businesses?

They really make the money from selling the settings for them. It's a rip off followed by a rip off.

A Kamoka Pearl for only $10? - Maybe....

I donated. I noticed a change in the way things were presented and the prizes. Didn't seem as user friendly this year, but I love what they do and am happy to be a part of building something new each year. I won something the first 2 years, but it's a lot bigger now...and that means a lot...

Pearls on silver chain necklace. What kind of pearls?

Plus the little dangle near it. It's a cool looking necklace, in any case!

Pearls on silver chain necklace. What kind of pearls?

My guess looking at the clasp is that it's a lot newer than the 60's. I'm not an expert on them, but that style looks fairly recent.

Pearls on silver chain necklace. What kind of pearls?

Can you show the clasp on the necklace? Sometimes that helps date a necklace.

Treasure or Trash ( South Sea Baroque pearls)

I'd like to see a pic of them layed out on something. White and gold South Seas come in circled, and I've seen a lot more of them recently. Could we get another shot of them on something instead of your hand?

Stainless Steel Wire to string pearls?

Pattye, there is .9 and .10 size wire. It is the only thing I know that will go through diamond beads. I've strung several strands, and then sworn I'd never do it again.

    The designer's corner

They're set like stud earrings - drilled and glued. They aren't meant to be worn together and perhaps you could, but the idea is really the simplicity. I'd done this before, but not with the FW.

    The designer's corner

Hot off the press (in fact I see I need to clean the scotch tape mark off the silver!). These were shot with my iPhone. Kasumi Chinese mmmm. Found these on a cafe table at Bacara Resort near Santa Barbara. Who knew! Forgive the wrinkly wrist shot! The Tahitians are from the...

Sooo hard to get the colors right. They are not that gold. Sort of a cross between Kasumi colored and pondslime.

Multi-Strand (3 or more) Necklace Challenge!

The cords are the same length (basically) I drilled the pearls myself. There is a gold plated hook on the end that is crimped and glued to the leather and a gold fill ring securing the ends of the knot. It is natural Greek leather, unsealed so it does darken slightly with skin contact.
