Natural Pearls/which type of xray? Bonhams asked for it

I hope it does not cost too much, because those pearls have no nucleus to give them away. Rather, a test for saltwater/freshwater origin would be more practical. An x-ray will tell you nothing - unless they are saltwater. If so, then get the xray to sell them at Bonhams.

Good to hear from you again! What a pearl!!

Natural Pearls/which type of xray? Bonhams asked for it

Yes. Bonhams needs the whole necklace to be certified. However, those do not look like any natural pearls I have ever seen. Instead of xray, I think the lab should just check whether they are freshwater or saltwater pearls. That should give you your answer. There will be no nucleus, so xraying...

Show Us Your Pearls In Action!!!

Baby Nurse, I don't usually care for the peach colors, but that one is fantastic on you! Love Catherine C! Every one should have at least one strand of hers. No one picks the colors as well as she does!

Natural Pearl, wild caught, Delaware Bay

You are lucky. That was a great find. It is special, being attached to the shell, because it looks much better than most food oyster pearls.

    Natural pearls

If this strand is almost 100 years old, it could be an original Mikimoto. He produced his first round pearls in 1916, and certainly made some strands that early, for special elite customers (and it sounds like your family was in those circles) but he did not go commercial until 1924. If it is...

I found a pearl on the beach

This is interesting. More photos please! Is that yellow part a protrusion? Also, what beach? Where in the world are you? How big is that pearl? Please, please we are crying for more info!!

    Just a Pearl..

Yes! Please post more photos. This is a mystery, and we are guessing since we can't touch it, so the more info you can supply, the better. The translucence is interesting. Not fair to say the specific gravity is that of a pearl and not tell how you tested and measured that feature.

Natural Pearl, wild caught, Delaware Bay

The pearl is from a food oyster, not a pearl oyster. Though this forum gets almost monthly finds of this kind of pearl from a food oyster, and everyone wonders how much they are worth, they are worth nothing but the good story you get out of it. Actually, this is the first wearable one I have...

    Just a Pearl..

Somewhere on this forum there is a photo of a pearl, 7,200 years old, found in Kuwait. It is extremely lustrous. The bead you showed us looks more like a rock- though it could be very very old. Would you mind putting up a few more photos. How did you get the photo s you put up? Tell us more...

Where to buy real pearls on internet?

Welcome! I just wanted to add, since you said you like pink overtones, the metallic whites have a coppery/pink overtone. My white metallic necklace has the most beautiful white pearls, comparable except for shape, to the Hanadama grade of akoya pearls. For earrings, you will most likely get the...

The colors are infinitely more complex than the Barney pearls, so after much wobbling, I come down on the Barney's are CFWP. Dang, I always hate to admit that!!!

Congratulations on your new position. I am a big fan of the genetics of the red wolf/coyotes down south and the wolf/coyote/dog combinations running around nowadays. And of course our local Sonoran/Mexican wolf/coyotes. I hope you link us to stuff!

But uv light does make pteria sternas fluoresce--most of the time. The more I look at it the more I like the pearls. They might have been cherry picked for their gnarly shapes and died to match. There is another similar necklace at barneys - same pearls, so logic says they have to pick a lot...

    Bleaching

They use some mild proprietary warm bleach solution, not all pearls have even natural colors; the ones that do are set aside. the others with uneven colors or spotty colors etc are bleached to even the colors on the pearls and between the pearls.. It makes matching easier and proper bleaching...

I forget his handle here. Maybe edrodiriguez? Anyway he knows Douglas, collects Bay of Cortez pearls of every kind and has a tiny website. Maybe it is time to just call in Douglas. I'll PM him. right now. This sure has been fun. Pearls are so mysterious, even when we think we know more than the...
