    knotting technique question

Hey, just because I don't use tools, doesn't mean I'll pick on people who do! ;) P-G should have videos of members knotting pearls with tools! A lot of folks seem to want to use a tool, so please do not let my opinion stop you from posting a video, tool or not. I was just a bit testy because...

    knotting technique question

Lloyd Thank you for posting a knotting video! I posted one a while ago because no one else had, and in my back-stage mom way, I thought it was a good thing to do, to start a trend of posting videos as well as photos. It is under my signature. Also I don't use tools, so I thought there should be...

    Pinna Nobilis Pearls!?

Thanks Dave, for an excellent post! It is about the best, most concise description of the options for sorting, grading and putting up for sale any unusual natural pearl. And, I doubt there is anyone else here who could have written that post! good luck 19boki96! Please keep us current and...

Need identification of 2 strands Please

I am so gratified that joke did not fly over the head of a newcomer! Thanks for reading old posts Lady D! :) I haven't searched for candling within this site, but we do have a recent thread that provided a lot of examples of natural pearls and a couple of wannabee natural pearls. It is no gold...

Need identification of 2 strands Please

Let's hope Douglas comes by again. They look to me like they all fluoresced to some degree and you seem to get better at capturing it as you go. That would make handing the pearls easier if they are all the same variety. Your white spots are light reflections. The last two photos seem to...

Need identification of 2 strands Please

On Douglas' video, there are bumps which turn white when the UV light is on. They didn't look like reflections. Very sharp edges.

GG the video says that SoC are the only ones to fluoresce that strong pink or red.... What other pearls do that and what colors? And what about those round white polka dots? Jewelsings. Are the white spots like the ones in the video? I bet there are people on this thread who really, really...

Need identification of 2 strands Please

That is exciting! Can you put up some photos? Every single pearl in this strand needs to be evaluated to determine as much as possible. Next, It would be neat to candle them to see if there are visible nuclei. There are threads here about candling pearls. It sometimes tells you something. And...

    Tucson 2015

kat- They do pre-approve people who attended last year's show, so as long as you attend, you get the passes ahead of time next year. Still, there are long lines every AM at the AGTA for all the folks who didn't get pre-approved.

The Holidome itself is changing names? That happens a lot in Tucson. Or is it moving to another Holiday Inn? Is the GLDA quitting Tucson or did it move to the old Holidome (lol) - or something?

If any of them are Pterias wouldn't they fluoresce under an ultraviolet light? A cheap uv flashlight is all you need. If any of them fluoresce, red or pink, it is a sign of a pteria sterna. It certainly would rule out the akoya possibility for any florescent pearls. Much cheaper first test...

    Tucson 2015

Not too much has changed in the companies and the show since I wrote that report except the prices -it isn't much of a guide- the same shows are in the same places every year. Two of the biggest shows are the AGTA which sets up in the Community center, and the GLDA which sets up at The Starr...

I need a tiny pearl for a clasp

I once commented that I had my favorite pendant pearl fall off the finding in the shower (luckily, it is so huge, it did not fall through the drain holes!!!)- and Sheri (La Corsetiere) told me it was because I was wearing it in the shower and hot water softens the glue. I think she may also be...

Need identification of 2 strands Please

I love a good mystery pearl! I have never seen such a cheap job of gluing- or such a cheap clasp on such pretty pearls. They may be mystery pearls, but they are worth a reknotting with a sterling clasp, at least- and those wonderful earrings really need rescuing from the horrible glue job...

Help With Pearl/Crystal Necklace Bracelet Set

Potato and circled, not rice crispy. I mentioned r-c pearls for historical dating purposes, (they actually come from a different mussel than the potato and circled ones anyway.) The style of your piece is especially pretty and should have sold for $150.00 new -or more.

Help With Pearl/Crystal Necklace Bracelet Set

Sidebar: Actually the Chinese were producing freshwater pearls in the 1970's but Japan bought them all and they were marketed as product of Japan they looked like and were sold as "Biwa" pearls according to Strack '06, p.420. It was 1981 when China started marketing their own pearls.

Help With Pearl/Crystal Necklace Bracelet Set

I have been reading Strack for a project and noted a general timeline for Chinese freshwater pearls. The rice crispies came on the market in 1981. The first smooth as in, not crinkled, potato pearls came on the market in 1992 , buttons and circles between 1992-1994, and the first near rounds in...

Help With Pearl/Crystal Necklace Bracelet Set

I think it is a lovely set! The pearls aren't top quality, but it doesn't matter, because the overall "look" is great. I am trying to remember when the Bali silver spacers came in and it was not the 80's. It was more like since 2000. Also the wired together look is more like 2005, though it is...

A Woman bit down on a quahog clam and found a large pearl

Pearls do something to the imagination. When you find one, you know it is so very, very rare to do so - so it is exciting because everyone knows "pearls are worth money". In the case of quahog and food oyster pearls, people believe the smallest misshapen pebble is something Cartier would pay...
