I know HSN sold Akoya pearls (still do). I don't know what QVC sold in their early days, but they quickly narrowed their offerings to freshwater pearls, especially after Honora came on board.

Yes, PP still has the 3.5-4.0 mm White Akoya Pearl Stud Earrings, on sale, too. Another option would be white sapphire. Black diamonds are generally cheaper than white diamonds. I usually wear diamond studs with pearls, but they were a gift.

I've been told that pearls can be affected by humidity or lack thereof. I believe pearls should not be kept in bank vaults because the air is too dry. And they do seem to absorb moisture from being worn.

This was my thought, as well. My white metallic pearls are comparable to Akoyas, but kinder to my wallet.
