What kind of pearls are these?

I am intrigued by the setting. It is obviously not a commercial setting. At the same time, they do not fit the pearls well at all. You can see metal that shouldn't be visible, the edges of the pearls aren't supported, some prongs are in bad positions and pushed to the side to accommodate the pearl.

    Help shopping?

Budget is always a problem... Alas, for infinite play money. For your budget, I would go for a nice pendant. Or you can save a bit more for some circled Tahitians (personally, I love them, as they are so interesting) and knot them yourself. Wen Pearls on Etsy usually has some lower priced...

    New member :) And a question :)

I think dyed pearls bad rep comes from the fact that nearly all dyed pearls are of awful quality. Personally, I still wear and love a string of "dove grey" dyed keshi. As long as they are sold honestly, with full disclosure, dyed pearls are great. They can be a fun introduction to pearls, a...

Show Us Your Pearls In Action!!!

I am drooling over the Tahitians. They look so perfect. I usually see smaller pearls on longer strands and this is just so lux.

    Vermeer’s pearls—great articles and images

Some art historian think that it was not, in fact a pearl. A pearl that size would have been crazy expensive. I've seen theories that it was a fake or, in fact, metal. The metal guy went into all sorts of reflection analysis but I just can't buy it. That earring doesn't look metallic at all for...

    Tahitian necklace or not?

Dyed pearls get a bad rep because so often dyed pearls are passed off as Tahitians. And because of some truly garish colours out there. However, if a dyed strand is sold as a dyed strand and priced as such, they can be lovely. I absolutely love my dyed dove grey keshi, for example.

Tahitian strand stringing adventure ahead! Would love input!

Those are looking good - just tuck in the tail in the second pearl from the left on the top photo. I would try to make the loops a little smaller, so it looks neater and more proportional, but the basic skill is there

    Fake ebay Mikimoto’s? “Vintage 14K M clasp”??

If you are feeling fishy about it, don't buy. The doubt will hound your mind if you do.

    Curious about my aunt's ring

The design looks older than the 70s, to my eyes. However, that does rule out freshies, unless they are replacement. My guess is that the pearls are actually a later modification to the ring.

These metallics are on the way—stringing plans

I love that size of Tahitians for a bracelet. My favourite bracelet is in that range as well, but more circled

Are these pearls real or fake?

The clasp looks older costume jewelry but the oval shape of the pearls look like freshwater. I cannot imagine imitations being so off round. Strange combination and I am curious

Are these pearls real or fake? Necklace #2

I wouldn`t even call them imitation. They are some translucent beads which could be a lot of different things.

    Owner of a Melo Melo?

Let's take a more structured approach First, is it organic or mineral? I am not sure what you mean by "I can surely say that isn't stone since it doesn't get colder like stones do. " Could you elaborate, please? Also, how are you testing hardness? Can you measure RI? How much does it weigh...

    Antique seed pearl necklace restoration

That is beautiful. The one name that comes to my mind is Jane Theis, in Philadelphia. I think she has restored similar pieces. If she doesn`t do it, she knows everyone in Philadelphia`s Jeweller`s Row and will probably know who can help you. Look her up on Facebook and send her my greetings :)

My guess is that it is beeswax.

    Opinions about these

The old knots are very stretched out so the restrung strands will be shorter. I don't like to criticize other people's work but natural pearls deserve a better stringing job. Having that segment of knots at the end is not a good idea. It will get grungy very fast and it is a weak point where...
