Buying loose pearls for a necklace?

I love this idea and I seriously thought of making myself a SoC pearl necklace this way a while ago. However, I know no other way to buy big single SoC pearls other than scarcely I spot one from Druzy's, and those usually come with 24k vermeil as pendants, so I gave up. My updated plan is to...

    Homework submission!

Thank you SurfnSci ! I eventually decided to make a ring to match with one of my bracelets. :p Go ahead and try it, it's fun and totally feasible!! I actually cut more than a "half" - the reason I said I cheated was I cut 2 halves... :o I just put my photos together and made a "video". I hope...

    Homework submission!

Yeah, it took me some debating which one to explore, as they all look lovely. Fortunately it still looks cute afterwards. :silly:

    Homework submission!

@CortezPearls, I used a dab, too. The nucleus fell way before that step... TBH I actually cheated and took tons of pics during the process, but I can only resist my hesitance to share if the professor won't get mad at my cheating and other classmates are interested to see. :ziplip:

    Faceted Tahitian pearls?

Wow we are front row to see more and more amazing faceted pearls!! Jeremy and Douglas, are these (in #23 and #26) also cut by Kazuo Komatsu? I can't help wondering how many pearls he can cut per year to commercialize... Just found his(?) factory seems also cut some gemstones...

    Homework submission!

Thank you, Charlotta! :07: I do want to make it into jewelry after seeing it's so cute inside. Even the banded bead itself makes a lovely pattern. The nucleus actually fell out, and I glued it back. I was quite surprised how easy it detaches. No wonder there are many pearls with a loose bead...

    Homework submission!

That's very nice of you to say that. :jester: I uploaded again, despite from my computer I can still see the photos up there, or do you mean more photos? I wanted to time it at the beginning, but was interrupted several times and later I lost track...and I also tried 400grit sandpaper because...

    Homework submission!

Yes Jeremy, here is one before cut. I was wondering what made it oval-ish and was there any organic mass or empty space underneath. It's a fun way to discover the answer except that I can't both know it and have the pearl intact. :D I wish I can have access to an X-ray machine one day...

    Homework submission!

So weird… I uploaded 2 photos in the original post and made sure they were there. The post went under “need approvement” (like almost always) for a day and night, now the post is here but the photos are gone… Sorry guys, I will re-upload when I get back to my computer!

New Uses of Pearls and Mother-of-Pearl in Medicine

How interesting !! Hopefully when I get old and start loosing teeth, I can have an option to graft a specially treated kind of acid-resistant mother-of-pearl teeth. Or, even better, acid-proof pearl teeth, which are nucleated with various teeth shaped nuclei. Hmm, shall I do uniform...

The secret of Empress Josephine's pearl necklace

Wow, a single piece of huge diamond as the clasp! Even the width is not shy for 2 rows of pearls. Thanks for sharing this CLICLASP ! I like the Empress way, too. And I like it that the necklace was sold together with the portrait. Isn't the portrait like an artful version of authenticity...

    Faceted Tahitian pearls?

Thanks very much for the info jshepherd CortezPearls these two beauties are fascinating :D! Thanks for sharing with us to see! Is this kind of faceting done in the lapidary way like how the "fine cut" gemstones get faceted using flat lap system and discs, and accurately calculated angle...

You are very welcome. On the bottom of that page there is a link "お問い合わせ" meaning "contact", click it and it allows you to send email. I would email them and ask if they or any of their retailers sell a pair if I were you.

    Faceted Tahitian pearls?

I might be wrong but I think it's called "華真珠" and is originally created in Japan, though ""華" means China. Guess this might be helpful to you: http://www.hanashinju.tokyo/products.html

    Another little mystery…

The luster makes me think they are akoya pearls - it does not look similar to any natural river pearls' luster I've seen on this forum. The shapes, especially the smaller and medium ones, also makes me think they are akoya, because their shapes are extremely similar to those in a strand I bought...

Need help from experts - what happened to this WSS pearl?

Thanks for your opinion, Jeremy. Do you think it's only a few layers' fracture, or all the layers from the visible fractured layer all the way to the center? Any thoughts on how this fracture could happen?
