    Sea of cortez custom strand

Yes, its Carolyn. She is still active. Sometimes it is easier to register the pink glow of Cortez pearls under video...also, do use a black colored background.

    Are these real?

Maybe it's a number related to the manufacturer? The "4" looks like an "A" to me. But this is just a simple guess. The metal must not be gold.

    Are these real?

I also get Imitation pearl vibes...they all look the same, they lack imperfections and that shallow optical depth... use a UV lamp!

I agree @SteveM : DNA testing is finally here...but might be expensive! Would not mind using it on a valuable natural pearl, but maybe not on a commercial grade cultured pearl. And YES: those porphyrins are unique to genus Pteria so the UV fluorescence does extend to all members of the genus...

G'Day Wendy! Sounds lovely! Would love to see if you encounter some of those "Baby Akoya" that are actually FWPs!

    StarryPearl's thread

Yes, white pearls from so called "black pearls" are almost indistinguishable from SSPs. I would love to see if there is indeed a way to tell them apart in a lab, but I believe it would be possible under the Ranman spectrum. With white Cortez there is always a faint pink glow...so we know there...

Well, these could be baroque akoya! The lighter colored Cortez look a lot like blueish baroque akoya! And it is a lovely necklace indeed! Why not try a UV lamp on the pearls...just for fun!

Scotland's Bill Abernethy and the Last Pearl Fisherman passed Away

Mussels can live for decades...but 80 years seems truly far-fetched to me! Then the size of the shell...looks very small to me, unlike an "old timer". The longer lived species usually grow to larger sizes or build very thick shells, and I don't see any of these things in the shell that was...

Scotland's Bill Abernethy and the Last Pearl Fisherman passed Away

Got the info from the Auction: the pearl sold for 93,951 British/Sterling Pounds including a buyer's premium. So, roughly some $123,761 American dollars.
