    Buying Pearls in Vietnam

Judi : with all that said Vietnam is still light years beyond it's neighbor Cambodia! Can't wait to see your photos.. And I am really glad that you got to see a real farm! Something i was never able to do as I spent most of my time in the south, and in the city for that matter. I have an even...

    Buying Pearls in Vietnam

I went to a "pearl farm" in Phu Quoc once, while I was living in Saigon, some years ago. They had the pre-requisite gift shop, with a beautiful mural of the body of an oyster painted on the wall.. I tracked down the owner later on that week and met him for a beer (because that seemed to be his...

    The designer's corner

Woww... lovely pieces are coming out of the corner! Here are actually the most most recent. A simple necklace of natural color rough sapphire beads from Bonita Creations and a big "spotted" silver blue Chinese pearl. A brass cuff bracelet that is sort of a work in progress, but I feel has...

    The designer's corner

YEAH! Finally a minute to focus on designs and share! I have been "neck deep" in shows and writing emails.. I have not had much time to design lately, but these are my current favorites.. (also love the pink and gold Chinese Kasumi bracelet.. must be fun to wear it!) Thanks for making this...

    Do real men wear pearls?

not to break up the blush fest :).. sorry fish boy... here is one of my favorite photos of "proof" that REAL MEN REALLY DO WEAR PEARLS! 26" inches or so of circle Tahitian pearls with a carved jade pendant on Sergeant Hand (he usually wears them tucked into his uniform... but he claims that...

    Japanese Kasumi vs. Chinese "Look-a-likes"

Sorry this took so long to get up on this post.. Here are a few photos of some of the "Chinese Kasumi" strands we found in Hong Kong on our last trip. The pearls are all natural color and range from 11-13mm. I loved these colorful ones and we even found some beautiful silver white ones with...

    Do real men wear pearls?

I think it's important to start teaching "real men" to wear pearls when they are REALLY CUTE LITTLE BOYS!

Pacific pearls history and archive photos

I am glad you all enjoyed these like I have. There are so many more its difficult to choose.... Slowly slowly. Wendy, I am not sure (nor is Fuji) why the Burmese pearl cultivation went under, but if I had to guess... It would be exactly what Nora said. Cheers and happy pearling! Please don't...

Pacific pearls history and archive photos

I am home again in sunny California again, and as promised here are just a few of the HUNDREDS of old Pacific Pearl photos that I unearthed in Hong Kong this last trip. Here is Fuji Voll as a baby in New York City 1949, with his mother Frieda Voll who is modeling a hair cap and several strand...

Is this, could this be a Abalone Pearl?

Judging from the setting I would go with Abalone pearl.. but that is admittedly a leap. It's hard to tell from the photo.. but it appears that they covered the back for a reason, I think I see that crusty brown surface that some Abalone pearls have on the profile photo.

    Chinese pearl export statistics.... OOPS!

Ever wonder who actually buys all of those terrible lusterless Chinese pearls with holes and offered by the ton? The answer is : NO ONE ! Here's one to chew on.... The other day during lunch here in Kowloon, I noticed a freight truck across the street being loaded with taped boxes (that looked...

    New Fashion & Style Forum

Ooohhh Caitlin, i love that.. It must feel great to wear! Before coming to Hong Kong i was up in Northern California and spent some lovely relaxing time finding Madrone berries on the forrest floor, i love making "nature necklaces" with those. Yes Amy Grace is a very talented designer, and...

Hi Mausketeer, those are oxidized sterling silver jump rings... They add a lovely depth to this piece... Its definetly one of my favorites recently. I like the way the metal work is very angular and sharp, and the pearls are so free form and organic. (usually they're called bails, when...

    Japanese Kasumi vs. Chinese "Look-a-likes"

Bodecia: The shell that the Chinese producers are using is still a bit of a mystery. Here is a photo of it (courtesy of Jeremy Shepherd, i think). At the ruckus Blaire and Jeremy gave a fascinating lecture on these developments, and that is when I first saw this shell. There was much talk about...

    Japanese Kasumi vs. Chinese "Look-a-likes"

Hi Pearlessence, glad you found these interesting! :) If your Chinese pearls are undrilled and you x-rayed them , you would most likely see that the nucleus was already drilled through (they do that before insertion into the mussel) No.. the x-rays are a tad blurry (but still very kind of...

    Japanese Kasumi vs. Chinese "Look-a-likes"

Not sure if this will be as interesting as the real pearl photos.. but for the real pearl "geeks" out there... (it took some time for us to find some one in Hong Kong who could scan these slides to digital form) .. but here are some x-ray photos of the sort of Chinese in-body nucleated fresh...
