Thanks pearlers for all the clarifications! Amazing topic.

    New pearls from China

Carolineg you've raised a really interesting question for me and it's something maybe the experts on the board could clarify. Is the size of a cultured pearl determined by the size of the "bead" that is put in the oyster? That would beg the question: why would larger pearls be special and...

    New pearls from China

7 necklaces is 123 years' worth of pearl growing with finds at 2 pearls a year ... something isn't quite ringing true there! The Chinese are very business savvy - I don't think there are any naive little sellers there! Just having "a stand in a village" may not be a real indication of the size...

    New pearls from China

Carolineg - did you say that the seller said she only finds two of these pearls a year? Wow - that means she sold you all the pearls this size she has found in the last 17 years. That would be some honour! Do you think she meant that she finds only two herself, and that she actually purchases...

    Are these real pearls?

Wow! What a find! Sitting next to the tape measure they look to be quite large across! Well done.

    are these pearls?

One of my strings of artificial pearls has a couple of similar blemishes - tiny dents in the underlying glass. But I still hope I'm wrong and they are real!

Roaring trade in empty Miki boxes on Ebay ...

I've noticed old, empty Mikimoto boxes fetching $40 and up on ebay - why would you pay that much for a Mikimoto box with no pearls in it?

    are these pearls?

I'll have to demur and say they may not be - they look to have cotton knots, and look almost identical to my (very lovely!) string of artificial pearls from Japan. I have a few artificial pearl necklaces and they are actually very beautiful - and their "nacre" is quite convincing! Mind you, I'll...

    i found these

Cultural difference? What cultural difference? Theft is wrong; restoration of property is right! Bacca, in your earlier post you assumed that the item had been "thrown away" ("perhaps due to painful memories"). I'd say it is far, far more likely that these were the remnants of a larger haul of...

    i found these

Do the Police in the United States not take in found items and attempt to restore them to the rightful owners? Is it not worth handing them in? I'm a little confronted by this culture of "if I pick it up off the street, it's mine to sell" and apparent agreement from other members!

    i found these

Pureflow if you found them in the trash, isn't it possible (if not likely) that they are either dumped stolen goods, or someone has accidentally thrown away something they value? Did you report your find to the police? Unless there were circumstances that made it certain they were yours to...

    non pierced earrings

Alex thanks for posting that site! I don't have pierced ears and only have screw & clip earrings. Pearlescence, I have some heavy earrings - venetian glass, and Scandinavian pewter & glass - I find that good clip findings hold them a lot better than screw-in.

Torres Pearls at Escape River, Far North Queensland, Australia

Actually an afterthought, Rusty & Bronwyn - Princess Mary's beautiful sister-in-law Marie and her husband have an Australian connection - Joachim has actually spent more time in Australia than Frederick has, he jackeroo'ed in Wagga in southern NSW for a year. Marie is also the patron of several...

Torres Pearls at Escape River, Far North Queensland, Australia

Thanks for the welcome and here's my response to your invitation to post some royal bling! Here is Mary's tiara. It is much better with the pearls, though it is still a modest tiara by royal standards. This one was bought for Mary at auction ( a dedicated royal watcher found it in a London...

Torres Pearls at Escape River, Far North Queensland, Australia

Alas, Princess Mary is Danish now, and is required to represent and promote Danish jewellers and Danish designers! I'm sure she would love to receive some pearls - the Danish royal jewellery collection includes some amazing pearls, some of which she has added to her tiara recently - but...
